Top 2012 tech news – a year in review

This year was rich with tech news and events, some prompted surprise and some reflected an obvious outcome that many were expecting.

We will present the tech year in review but with a twist, we decided that it’s not up to the journalists, blogs, and news portals to decide what was most and what was less important, that’s why we will only present several major technology event and news and we will ask you to rank them, or to add to them.

Top tech news for 2012 (unranked):

1- Facebook  IPO : Facebook the Social network giant goes public, shares slide after an initial soar.

2- Facebook Buys Instagram ( a popular photo sharing mobile social network) – Mark Zuckerberg didn’t even need to include the company’s board in the decision.

3- Google introduce Nexus 7 tablet and Nexus Q TV streaming device (Apple TV competitor).

4- Apple release a high-resolution Retina Display Macbook laptop, slimmer lighter with longer battery.

5- Megaupload (and the Megaupload sister sites) were shut down by US Justice department and Kim Dotcom arrested.

6- BlackBerry‘s parent company, Research in Motion losing revenue and market share to Android and Apple smartphones.

7- Stop Online Privacy Act (SOPA) bill was put off (the bill would have allowed the Department Of Justice forbid search engines from indexing, and advertising networks from advertising on websites distributing copyrighted material.)many website went black for a day in protest against the bill – asking visitors to sign petitions against SOPA.

8- Microsoft Produce a tablet, introduced at a press event in June, the 9mm thick, 1.5-pound tablet computer runs Windows 8, and comes with a case that doubles as a full QWERTY keyboard.

9- Apple loses lawsuit against Samsung Galaxy tablet, because according to the judge: “They do not have the same understated and extreme simplicity which is possessed by the Apple design. They are not as cool.”

10- Viral Video Gangnam style reaches more than 1 billion views.

11- Digg fail.

12- Apple Maps fail.

13- Google Now an answer to Siri.

14- No more Free Google Apps.

15- Microsoft buys Skype in 2011 and now is planing to retire Live messenger, also known as Msn.

16- Uproar against Google News.
